Businesses struggle with heterogenous systems on a multitude of operating systems (OS) and versions. This creates a constant cycle of upgrade, throw-away, and rewrite. There is also the danger of being abandoned by the vendor and struggling with ancient systems for which there is little or no support. If there is support is usually comes at a premium price. For example, each new version of Windows creates issues and incompatibilities with certain software. Licensing and frequent upgrading is becoming more of an issue as OSes and software vendors try and squeeze the last nickel off of their software. Older versions are quickly "abandoned", forcing the upgrades and consuming valuable resources to keep up with the race.
How do you remove your business from this vicious cycle?
The basic solution is to standardize on development that follows industry standards, cross platform in which you have access to the source code, and more independent of operating systems and versions.
Web based systems can go a long way toward meeting these needs. Java, along with open sourced and standards based application servers, web servers and database systems, provide a foundation that can function on any of the major operating systems. Clients run off of either a browser-based client or "WebStart" Java based clients. There is either, no installation on the client or a minimal "one-time-only" for all applications with an install of the JDK and WebStart. Any client with a browser that supports the W3C standards and/or a Java virtual machine can be used.
